Tokaji Szamorodni 2001 - sweet

Szamorodni 2001 sweetThis was our last Szamorodni relying exclusively on grapes harvested from the Meszes-major vineyard. 1350 bottles only.

alcohol: 11.87
acidity: 7.0
sugar free extrakt: 35.3
residual sugar: 72.0

pH: 3.5

The golden color heralds a mature but still fruity wine with a complex nose mingling notes of dried fruits, apricot jam, and fresh-picked berries shriveled by botrytis. The aromas of sun-dried fruits powerfully reassert themselves on the palate.

Culinary recommendation: A feasible accompaniment to desserts not overpowered by sugar, but probably best served with fine blue cheese. We have no qualms about pairing it with foie gras or liver of duck, either.

Meszes-major 2003 – Tokaji Furmint – semi-dry

The cohesive soils of the "Limestone Grange" yield wines of extraordinary fruitiness, complemented perfectly by the aromas of new oak. The entire lot was fermented and matured in new casks of the Gönci type. 1076 bottles.
Date of bottling: November 25, 2004.

Pale yellow in color, with a quickly developing, complex nose led by quince and medicinal herbs with a hint of butter in the background. Off-dry on the palate, with an emerging fine smokiness complementing the fruity-herbal notes harking back to the scent. A medium-bodied, well-rounded wine that does not err on the side of excessive acidity, and has probably just entered the brightest period of its life.
Tasting notes by Thomas Zöbelin (November 2005)

Culinary recommendation: Serve with richly flavored meat entrées garnished with fruit, such as roast turkey stuffed with chestnuts, or braised beef with quince. Can be helpful as a bridge between main course and dessert.
