Karádi-Berger Winebar

We own lots in the Palandor, Narancsi and the Meszes-major ("Limestone Grange") vineyards, the latter being also known as the Vay after its one-time owners. All these sites have a superb southern exposure. At present, 3.6 hectares of our 5.3 hectare-estate are under fruit bearing vines.

Across from the Meszes-major, on the other side of the road linking Highway 37 to Erdőbénye, rises the Sajgó, an ancient volcanic hill with a quaint historic mansion nested in its side. The Palandor vineyard, on the southern slope of this hill, used to be part of the ecclesiastic estate maintained by the Szepes Chapter. The wines produced by the volcanic rhyolite soils here have a powerful mineral character, and are harvested earlier than the average - yet with very high sugar degrees - owing to the excellent southern exposure.
The western tip of the south-facing Előhegy Hill, approached from the road connecting Erdőbénye and Tolcsva, the Narancsi also has rhyolite-dominated soils, but is even more stony than the Palandor. According to hearsay, it owes its name to the deep orange hue of the grapes grown here - a result of the unique soil and the warm southern orientation.
Turning off highway 37 toward Erdőbénye, you will see the Meszes Hill on your left. Situated on the southern slope of this hill, the Meszes-major vineyard, counted among the finest terroirs of the region by the authors of the 1867 Tokaj-Hegyalja Album, was owned by the barons Vay until 1945, and it still goes locally by that noble family name. The vineyard boasts a special soil type known as the nyirok, a clayey soil created by weathering volcanic rocks, which is prized for growing particularly zesty, fruity wines. Most of the vines in this distinctive site were planted by the Vays before World War II.
